What to Expect in Court-Ordered Reunification Therapy in Newport Beach & Montebello
The Couples Therapy & Reunification Counseling
Healing Hearts. Rebuilding Families. Restoring Hope.
When reunification therapy is court-ordered, many parents feel anxious, confused, or unsure of what to expect. Families often ask:
What will therapy look like?
Will my child feel safe?
How long will it take?
How involved are the parents?
What happens if my child is resistant?
At The Couples Therapy & Reunification Counseling, we understand this process can feel overwhelming. That’s why our reunification work is structured, court-aligned, and clinically guided, always prioritizing the emotional safety of the child.
What Is Court-Ordered Reunification Therapy?
Reunification therapy is a therapeutic process designed to repair a strained parent-child relationship after a period of conflict, distance, or emotional disconnection. It is commonly recommended when there has been:
A long gap in contact
Allegations (investigated or unsubstantiated)
The child’s fear, confusion, or resistance
The goal is not to assign blame but to gradually rebuild safety, trust, and emotional connection in a clinician-guided, structured way.
The Quiroz Bridge Method
A structured, neutral, and research-informed approach to reunification
Our reunification process follows The Quiroz Bridge Method™, a structured model that integrates:
Attachment theory
Gradual exposure & desensitization
Child readiness assessments
Parent accountability & emotional education
This approach allows both parent and child to move toward reconnection without pressure, blame, or fear, making space for authentic rebuilding of trust.
Our Phase System
We work on the pace of the child’s comfortability, not the court’s clock.
Progress is gradual and always based on readiness, safety, and emotional regulation.
Phase 0 – Rapport & Safety Building
Individual sessions to understand family history, narratives, fears, beliefs, and goals. The therapist assesses readiness and builds emotional safety first.
Phase 1 – Letter Writing / Narrative Repair
Gentle communication through written letters to begin soft repair and reduce emotional distance.
Phase 2 – Text Communication
Clinician-monitored texting begins — always guided and clinically paced.
Phase 3 – Phone Contact
Live voice contact with therapeutic structure, support, and real-time regulation tools.
Phase 4 – Virtual Sessions
Video-based interactions begin so the child can see, hear, and build safe exposure before in-person.
Phase 5 – In-Person Sessions
Conjoint sessions in our clinic, only when the child demonstrates emotional readiness and stability.
Phase 6 – Step-Up Plan (Increased Contact & Transitions)
Session length or frequency may increase. Community-based sessions may begin. The focus is on stability, regulation, and consistent connection outside of therapy. A structured plan is created for ongoing interaction with reduced dependency on the therapist.
Phase 7 – Exit Plan & Maintenance
The family transitions away from the therapy room toward increased independence. Tools are reviewed, communication plans are reinforced, and safety strategies are established. Therapist may gradually step back and become consultation-based only, as needed.
The Child’s Pace Leads the Process
We never force contact. Every step is guided by:
Child readiness assessments
Attachment repair goals
Emotional regulation tools
Clinical observation & safety
Gradual desensitization
Parents are also supported with accountability work, learning tools for emotional attunement, validation, communication, and healthy reconnection.
